Amarillo, Texas – Warm, breezy conditions across the Texas Panhandle could give way to isolated but potentially severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the southeastern counties facing the greatest risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, high temperatures on Wednesday will climb into the upper 70s and 80s, creating conditions favorable for storm development after 3 p.m. The primary threat zone includes cities like Shamrock, Wellington, and McLean, where storms could form or move in between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. If severe weather develops, expect hail up to 1.25 inches and wind gusts reaching 70 mph.

While the chance of storms remains low—only 10–20%—emergency officials recommend staying weather-aware through the evening, especially in southeastern areas of the Panhandle. Lightning, large hail, and damaging winds could disrupt travel on I-40 and surrounding highways. Residents should charge devices and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak storm hours.

This is not expected to be a widespread outbreak, but conditions may shift quickly. Additional updates or advisories could be issued if storm cells intensify later today.
