Amarillo, TX – Strong winds are expected to impact the Texas Panhandle and parts of western Oklahoma on Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Amarillo. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST Tuesday for multiple counties across both states.

According to the NWS, the warning covers Cimarron and Texas counties in Oklahoma, along with Dallam, Hartley, Moore, and Sherman counties in Texas. A separate warning also includes Beaver County, Oklahoma, and Hansford, Hutchinson, and Ochiltree counties in Texas. Winds are forecast to range between 30 to 50 mph, with localized gusts of up to 70 mph.

The strong winds are expected to cause widespread power outages as trees and power lines could be knocked down. Travel will be hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles on highways and open roads. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and secure any outdoor objects that could be blown away.

Residents are advised to remain indoors, particularly in lower levels of buildings, and avoid windows. The NWS recommends watching for falling debris and using caution if travel is necessary. Conditions should improve after 8 p.m. Tuesday as winds begin to diminish.
