Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous heat is returning to the Texas Panhandle, with cities like Amarillo, Borger, and Dumas facing an 80% or greater chance of reaching 100°F through early next week, according to the National Weather Service.
The Amarillo office reported Friday morning that the region is shifting from a brief rainy spell into a hot, dry pattern that could persist for several days. Palo Duro Canyon leads the heat index outlook, with temperatures expected to exceed 100°F from Friday through Tuesday, peaking at a 90% chance on Sunday.
Communities including Pampa, Guymon, and Clarendon are also likely to see triple-digit highs over the weekend. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat could lead to serious health risks, especially for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors without air conditioning. Heat safety reminders include: avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, wear light clothing, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day temperature outlook keeps the Panhandle in the bullseye of above-normal heat, with below-average rainfall compounding the threat.
Warnings remain in effect through early next week, with updates expected daily.
