Amarillo, Texas – Triple-digit heat could return to the Texas Panhandle on Thursday, with Amarillo and Borger facing up to a 40% chance of hitting 100°F, prompting heat safety reminders across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, highs on July 7 are expected to range from the mid-90s to the lower 100s. The area most at risk includes central and northern parts of the Panhandle—especially cities like Borger, Dumas, and Perryton—where the likelihood of hitting 100°F climbs to between 40–70%. Amarillo, Hereford, and Childress face a lower but still notable 10–40% chance.
Heat index values are forecast to closely match the actual air temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illness for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours and to stay hydrated throughout the day.
While this is not the season’s first heat wave, Thursday’s spike could mark one of the hottest days so far this July for parts of the High Plains. Emergency managers are monitoring conditions and caution that more advisories could follow if temperatures rise faster than anticipated.
Warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening; additional updates are expected midweek.
