Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Freeze Watch for parts of the eastern Texas Panhandle, effective from Sunday evening through Monday morning, as the season’s coldest air mass moves into the region.
According to the alert, temperatures could fall as low as 22°F, bringing the potential for widespread frost and hard freeze conditions across Collingsworth, Donley, Gray, and Wheeler Counties. Cities under the watch include Pampa, Clarendon, Shamrock, and Wellington.
Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive vegetation, and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to cover plants, wrap pipes, and allow faucets to drip overnight to prevent freezing.
The NWS says this event will likely mark the end of the growing season for much of the eastern Panhandle. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to plummet late Sunday night into early Monday morning.
Conditions are expected to warm slightly by midweek, though overnight lows will remain chilly.
