Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Freeze Warning for parts of the eastern Texas Panhandle, including Gray, Wheeler, Donley, and Collingsworth Counties, effective from 9 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters expect temperatures to drop as low as 25 degrees, bringing potentially damaging cold to sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing. According to the NWS, frost and freeze conditions could kill late-season crops and outdoor plants if precautions aren’t taken.
Residents are urged to cover or bring indoors any plants that could be affected by freezing temperatures. Homeowners should also wrap exposed outdoor pipes and consider allowing faucets to drip slightly overnight to prevent freezing.
While daytime highs are expected to rebound early next week, the cold air mass will mark one of the first widespread freezes of the season for the eastern Panhandle, including communities such as Pampa, Shamrock, Clarendon, and Wellington.
Drivers should also use caution during the early morning hours Monday, as frost formation may make bridges or elevated surfaces slick in spots.
