Amarillo, Texas – Steady rain and unusually cool May temperatures are drenching the Texas Panhandle today, with flood risks increasing as up to 2 inches of additional rainfall are expected through early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, rain chances will persist through the day, with widespread totals between 1 and 2 inches. Low-lying areas and poor-drainage spots, especially around Dumas, Perryton, and Borger, may see minor flooding due to saturated ground. A flash flood risk of 15–40% exists for areas northeast of Amarillo, including Stratford and Gruver, through 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Daytime highs will stall in the low to mid-50s across the region — nearly 20 degrees below average for early May. Amarillo is expected to top out at 52°F, with Dalhart and Stratford hovering near 50°F under continued cloud cover.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and allow extra travel time in areas prone to flooding. Residents are advised to clear storm drains and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts.

Rain and flood threats are expected to taper by Wednesday afternoon, but NWS says additional watches could be issued if heavy bands redevelop overnight.
