Lubbock, TX — Strong southwest winds and extremely low humidity levels are setting the stage for dangerous fire conditions across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains on Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Friday. The watch covers multiple counties including Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran, Hale, Lamb, and Yoakum, where dry fuels and gusty winds could rapidly accelerate fire spread.
Forecasters expect southwest winds ranging from 25 to 30 mph, with gusts peaking near 40 mph. Humidity could drop as low as 11 percent throughout the day, significantly increasing the risk of wildfire ignition and spread.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could produce sparks. The National Weather Service warns that any fires that do develop could quickly become uncontrollable, especially in areas with dry vegetation.
This Fire Weather Watch follows a Red Flag Warning that expired Thursday evening. Residents are encouraged to stay alert for updated advisories or an escalation to a Red Flag Warning as conditions evolve.
For safety, secure loose items outdoors, avoid open flames, and have a fire response plan in place.
