Amarillo, TX – Strong winds and widespread blowing dust are expected to impact Amarillo and surrounding areas on Friday, creating hazardous travel conditions. Drivers on I-40 and other major roadways should prepare for reduced visibility and strong gusts.

According to the National Weather Service, winds will pick up Thursday night, with gusts reaching 30 mph. By Friday morning, wind speeds will increase to 30-40 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. The strongest winds are expected between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday. Areas of blowing dust could significantly impact visibility, especially along highways and open areas.

Friday night will remain windy, but speeds will decrease slightly to 10-20 mph. By Saturday, cooler air moves in, bringing a high of 54°F with partly cloudy skies. Winds will continue out of the north but at a calmer 5-10 mph.

The extended forecast shows a return to mild spring weather. Sunday will be sunny with a high near 62°F. Monday and Tuesday will bring mostly sunny skies, with highs reaching the mid-70s.
