Amarillo, Texas – Severe storms are expected to bring the risk of flash flooding, damaging winds, and hail across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles late Saturday and into Sunday night, keeping much of the region on alert for rapidly changing conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, spotter activation may be needed late Saturday as rounds of thunderstorms sweep through, particularly impacting areas including Dumas, Canyon, and the Palo Duro Canyon region. Isolated flooding is possible on local roads and low-lying spots, especially after dark. By Sunday, thunderstorm chances linger before a sharp shift to dangerous heat begins to take hold.

Cities across the Panhandle, including Amarillo and Pampa, will see the hottest stretch of the summer so far starting Tuesday, with temperatures peaking near 99°F by midweek. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors as heat advisories may be issued.

Travelers should stay alert for changing weather through early Monday, especially along I-40 and US-60, where heavy rainfall could create slick roads. Utility outages and minor delays are possible in areas hardest hit by storms.

Hazardous conditions will ease after Sunday night’s storms, but the heat wave is expected to dominate through at least Friday. Stay tuned for additional alerts if new thunderstorms develop or if the heat intensifies.
