Lubbock, TX – The Texas Panhandle and South Plains are under a Cold Weather Advisory until 9 a.m. Sunday, with wind chills plunging below zero. Residents in the region should prepare for even colder temperatures as an Extreme Cold Watch goes into effect Monday evening, bringing wind chills as low as -12°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, areas including the Caprock, South Plains, and the far southern Texas Panhandle are expected to see dangerously cold conditions into early Tuesday. Bitter wind chills could cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes on exposed skin. Authorities urge residents to dress in layers, covering hands, faces, and ears, and to limit outdoor activity.
Sunday’s daytime high is expected to reach 30°F with mostly sunny skies, but temperatures will drop to 16°F Sunday night. By Monday, increasing clouds will bring a slight chance of overnight flurries, with a high of 29°F and a low of 11°F.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will see partial clearing with a high near 32°F before the region warms to 50°F by midweek. Clear skies and rising temperatures are expected to continue through Thursday.
Drivers are advised to use caution on rural highways and elevated roadways, as icy spots may form overnight. Pets should be brought indoors, and pipes should be insulated to prevent freezing.
