Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – A major winter storm is set to bring widespread snow, ice, and dangerously cold conditions across Oklahoma and parts of north Texas beginning early Friday, creating a high risk for treacherous travel and extended disruptions through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Friday morning through Sunday noon for much of central, western, northern, and southern Oklahoma, as well as portions of north Texas. Snow totals of six inches or more are likely in many areas, while southern Oklahoma and adjacent Texas counties could see a glaze of ice up to two-tenths of an inch. Gusty winds near 35 mph on Friday may worsen blowing snow and reduce visibility.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly along major corridors including Interstate 35, Interstate 40, and Interstate 44, impacting travel in Oklahoma City, Norman, Stillwater, Lawton, Wichita Falls, and surrounding communities. Emergency managers warn that a combination of snow-covered roads, ice, and bitter wind chills Friday night through Sunday morning could make travel extremely dangerous.
Residents are urged to delay unnecessary trips, prepare emergency kits, and keep vehicles fueled if travel cannot be avoided. Officials also advise dressing in layers and covering exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite. Conditions are expected to remain hazardous through the weekend, and additional updates or advisories may be issued as the storm unfolds.
