Lubbock, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to push across the Texas South Plains and southwest Oklahoma Tuesday evening, bringing the threat of hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. CDT for areas including Lubbock, Plainview, Childress, and Altus. Storms will likely form along a zone stretching 45 miles north and south of a line from west of Lubbock to northeast of Altus.
High-based storms and dry air near the surface are increasing the risk of strong outflow winds capable of knocking down trees, power lines, or damaging roofs. The early phases of storm development could also support isolated large hail, particularly near Lubbock and Plainview.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid driving through heavy downpours, and remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions. Power outages and brief travel disruptions may occur in the hardest-hit pockets.
Storms should diminish in intensity by late evening, but additional watches or warnings may be issued depending on how the system evolves.
