Amarillo, Texas – Snow and gusty winds are expected to impact travel across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles on Friday, Jan. 9, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect throughout the day and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9 through midnight Friday night, with accumulating snow and reduced travel conditions expected across the region.
Snow accumulations of up to 4 inches are forecast for Beaver County in Oklahoma and the north central and western Texas Panhandle, including Hansford, Ochiltree, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, and Oldham counties. Communities potentially impacted include Beaver, Perryton, Spearman, Dumas, Borger, Vega, Channing, Gruver, and Wildorado.
Winds are expected to gust as high as 35 mph, which may lead to areas of blowing snow and further reductions in visibility, especially in open and rural areas.
The National Weather Service warns that road conditions may become slippery and hazardous, with impacts likely during both the Friday morning and evening commutes, Jan. 9. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become slick as snowfall continues.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Officials recommend checking road conditions before traveling.
