Amarillo, Texas – Heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous travel conditions across the far Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles on Friday, Jan. 9, as Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through late night.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9 through midnight Friday night for Texas County in Oklahoma and Sherman County in Texas, including Guymon and Stratford. Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected, with winds gusting up to 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Additional Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through midnight Friday night, Jan. 9, for Cimarron County, Oklahoma, and Dallam County, Texas, including Boise City, Dalhart, Keyes, and Conlen. These areas could receive 5 to 9 inches of snow, with wind gusts up to 40 mph further worsening road conditions.

The National Weather Service warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous, making travel very difficult at times. Conditions are expected to significantly impact both the Friday morning and evening commutes, Jan. 9, particularly on open highways and rural routes.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and allow extra time to reach destinations.
