AMARILLO, Texas – A calm and chilly night will lead to the first widespread frost of the season across the northern Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles early Sunday. The National Weather Service in Amarillo said a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Sunday for Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Hartley, Moore, and Ochiltree counties in Texas, along with Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver counties in Oklahoma.

According to the Weather Service, temperatures will dip as low as 34 degrees by dawn under clear skies and light winds. Patchy frost is expected to form in rural areas and low-lying valleys from Dalhart to Guymon and Beaver.

Agricultural officials urged residents to cover tender plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing ahead of the coldest hours before sunrise. Frost could damage or kill sensitive crops and garden vegetation. Drivers along U.S. 87, U.S. 54, and U.S. 412 may also see frost accumulation on bridges and windshields during the early commute.

According to the National Weather Service, conditions will warm quickly after sunrise, with highs climbing into the upper 60s by afternoon. Warmer, dry weather is expected through midweek.
