Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Freeze Warning in effect until 9 a.m. CDT Thursday, as sub-freezing temperatures spread across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles overnight.
According to the NWS, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 20°F, threatening crops, outdoor plants, and unprotected plumbing. The advisory includes areas such as Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Canadian, Dumas, Clarendon, and Beaver, Oklahoma, as well as Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could result in significant damage to vegetation and burst outdoor pipes if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, wrap exposed pipes, and allow indoor faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing.
The coldest temperatures are expected around sunrise, with gradual warming by mid-morning. Daytime highs are forecast to return to the upper 40s and 50s, offering some relief later in the day.
This marks one of the first widespread freezes of the season for the region, signaling the arrival of late-fall cold across the Panhandles.
