Ratliff City, Oklahoma – A light earthquake struck near the Texas–Oklahoma border late Thursday morning, rattling a rural stretch of Love County just southeast of Ratliff City.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred at 11:27 a.m. UTC Thursday at a depth of approximately 2.7 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 5 kilometers southeast of Ratliff City, placing it within a few miles of the Red River and the Texas state line.

While earthquakes of this size rarely cause damage, residents in southern Oklahoma communities such as Marietta and areas north of Gainesville, Texas, may have felt a brief shake. Shallow quakes, like this one, can sometimes be more noticeable despite their lower magnitude.

Southern Oklahoma has experienced periodic seismic activity over the past decade. Most events in the 2.0 to 3.0 range result in minimal impact beyond light indoor shaking.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported. The USGS and Oklahoma Geological Survey continue monitoring the region for additional seismic activity.
