Fort Smith, Ark. – A dangerous round of severe storms is moving through the region today, prompting a Tornado Watch across parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas until 5 p.m. CDT. Residents from Paris to Poteau to Fort Smith are urged to stay weather-aware, as conditions favor the development of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a strong line of storms is sweeping eastward out of southern Oklahoma and north Texas, bringing with it the potential for wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as 1.5 inches. A few tornadoes are likely, with the possibility of one or two becoming strong and long-lasting.

Communities across northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma, and western Arkansas—including Idabel, Broken Bow, Mena, and De Queen—should expect rapidly changing conditions. Power outages, downed trees, and localized flash flooding are all possible this afternoon. Drivers along U.S. Highways 59 and 70 should avoid non-essential travel during peak storm activity.

Emergency officials recommend charging phones, securing outdoor items, and reviewing tornado safety plans. Schools and local agencies may issue early closures or delays depending on storm intensity.

This Tornado Watch remains in effect through 5 p.m. Wednesday. Additional warnings or advisories could follow if storm activity intensifies.
