Amarillo, TX – Dangerous wind conditions are forecast to impact parts of Texas and New Mexico through Thursday evening, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph and dust reducing visibility across major highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo and El Paso, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT/MDT Thursday for Cimarron County in Oklahoma, Dallam and Hartley counties in the Texas Panhandle, and multiple highland and basin regions in New Mexico, including Sierra, Sacramento, and Gila areas.

Southwest winds between 30 and 45 mph are expected, with peak gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph. These conditions are likely to cause widespread power outages, downed trees, and hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and RVs along U.S. Route 54, Interstate 40, and Highway 70.

Dust advisories are also active in New Mexico’s Bootheel and Tularosa Basin, where visibility may fall below one mile. Residents and drivers are advised to “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” during dust storms.

Transportation agencies urge motorists to delay travel where possible and monitor local alerts. Secure loose outdoor items, avoid forested areas, and remain indoors away from windows during peak winds.

More advisories may be issued into Friday for wind and dust impacts.
