Midland, Texas – Dangerous winds are set to batter the Guadalupe Mountains beginning Wednesday evening, creating hazardous travel conditions across parts of West Texas and southeast New Mexico through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland–Odessa, a High Wind Warning is now in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas and Eddy County, New Mexico. West winds of 35 to 55 mph are expected, with peak gusts reaching up to 70 mph, especially at higher elevations and exposed ridgelines. The warning runs from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening.
The strongest impacts are expected along Guadalupe Pass and surrounding mountain roadways, where crosswinds could make driving extremely difficult or dangerous. High-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, campers, RVs, and vans face an increased risk of being pushed out of lanes or overturned. Officials strongly recommend delaying travel through Guadalupe Pass or using alternate routes if possible.
Aviation interests will also be affected, as severe turbulence and powerful downward airflows may develop near the mountains. Low-flying aircraft could encounter sudden and extreme wind shifts, particularly on the lee side of the terrain.
Winds will gradually ease late Thursday evening, but conditions may remain hazardous for much of the day. Drivers and pilots are urged to monitor updates closely, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the high wind event unfolds.
