Texas–New Mexico — A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas and southeast New Mexico until early Saturday, creating hazardous travel and aviation conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, west winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts reaching 60 mph are expected during the day Friday. Overnight, winds are forecast to shift to the north and northeast at similar speeds, with the strongest winds focused through Guadalupe Pass and higher elevations.

The warning includes the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy County in New Mexico, the Guadalupe Mountains above 7,000 feet, and the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains in west Texas. Impacted locations include Pine Springs, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Queen.

The National Weather Service warned that travel will be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as campers, vans, and tractor-trailers. Strong crosswinds and sudden gusts may lead to dangerous driving conditions along mountain highways and exposed roadways.

Aviation impacts are also expected, with severe turbulence possible near the mountains. Low-flying light aircraft may encounter hazardous conditions, especially near ridgelines and mountain passes.

Officials emphasized that winds will be strongest at higher elevations, where conditions may become especially dangerous. Drivers of high-profile vehicles are strongly encouraged to consider postponing travel until winds weaken.

The High Wind Warning is scheduled to remain in effect until 5 a.m. MST Saturday (6 a.m. CST). Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Saturday morning as winds diminish.

Residents and travelers should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates and local alerts for any changes or extensions to the warning.
