Santa Teresa, N.M. – Heavy rain has triggered a Flood Advisory for Sierra County through 3:30 p.m. Monday, with the National Weather Service warning of rising water in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones. Some rural roads and low-water crossings could become impassable this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa, radar detected heavy rain around 1:35 p.m. as thunderstorms developed across the region. Between a half-inch and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with another inch possible before conditions ease.

Localized flooding is expected along arroyos and small creeks, especially in northwestern Sierra County. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and find alternate routes, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

The advisory remains in effect until mid-afternoon, and additional watches could be issued if rain bands persist over the area. Residents are advised to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
