Houston, TX – A woman and her infant died Friday after authorities said she intentionally drove her vehicle into the San Jacinto River with her three children inside.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies responded to the 17300 block of Market Street in Channelview after callers reported a vehicle going off the roadway and submerging in the river. A Good Samaritan was able to rescue two of the children, ages 5 and 7. Both survived.
Gonzalez said the adult female driver and an infant inside the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene. A suicide note was later recovered from the submerged vehicle, leading investigators to classify the case as a murder-suicide.
Dive Team and Marine Unit members with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist in the recovery efforts. EMS and fire department personnel were also on scene providing aid.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials said counseling services are being made available to surviving family members.
Sheriff Gonzalez called the event a “tragic case” and urged community members struggling with mental health issues to seek support.
