Houston, Texas – Scorching heat is set to bake Southeast Texas this Memorial Day weekend, with Sunday’s high in Houston pushing 102°F and a heat index of 106°. As families prepare for barbecues or travel plans, residents should brace for dangerous conditions—especially between 1 and 5 p.m. when peak heat strikes.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston, South winds between 10 and 15 mph will offer little relief Sunday. The heat continues into Memorial Day (Monday), with slightly lower highs near 91°F. But instability builds late in the day. A slight chance of thunderstorms develops after 10 a.m. Monday, growing stronger by Monday night, when a 40% chance of thunderstorms may bring isolated flooding, gusty winds, and lightning.

Houston’s five-day forecast calls for a shift from heat to increasing storm activity, especially from Monday night through Wednesday, when a 50% chance of thunderstorms and possible heavy downpours are expected. Beltway 8 and I-610 may see slick roads and delays during evening commutes.

Tuesday brings another 40% storm risk, with Wednesday potentially the most active day weather-wise. Thunderstorms are likely, with high temps dropping to the upper 80s—a sign summer moisture is settling in.

By Thursday and Friday, storms taper slightly, with only a 20–30% chance of rain and highs remaining near 87°F.

What to do:

  • Stay indoors Sunday afternoon to avoid heat-related illness
  • Charge devices Monday in case of Monday night power outages
  • Avoid flooded roadways Wednesday if storms intensify

More storms are possible later next week as summer heat continues to clash with Gulf moisture. Stay alert and check for weather updates daily.
