Lake Charles, Louisiana – Frost glints across rooftops this morning as cold air settles low over southwest Louisiana, biting harder in open fields and along quiet highways. Breath hangs in the air, and exposed pipes face their first real test of the season.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Sunday morning, with a Freeze Watch active from this evening into Sunday. Wind chills early today dip into the upper 20s, while overnight lows fall near 22 degrees, cold enough to damage unprotected plumbing and sensitive vegetation.

The chill stretches across Calcasieu, Cameron, Beauregard, and Allen parishes, extending into southeast Texas near the Sabine River. Drivers along I-10, U.S. 171, and rural parish roads should watch for patchy frost, especially where moisture lingers on bridges and shaded pavement. Even a thin glaze can reduce traction quickly after sunset.

Sunshine helps later today, but it does little to erase the cold edge. Afternoon temperatures reach the lower 40s, still well below normal. Calm winds tonight allow temperatures to drop fast, increasing the risk of frost by midnight. Residents are urged to wrap exposed pipes, drip faucets, and bring pets indoors. Tender plants should be covered or moved.

Sunday brings a noticeable rebound. Skies stay bright, and highs climb near 50 degrees, though frost may linger early in low-lying areas. The warming trend accelerates early next week. By Monday, highs surge into the mid-60s, signaling a sharp shift as February begins.

Moisture returns by Tuesday, with increasing clouds and a chance of showers Tuesday night. While the cold eases, rapid temperature swings raise concerns for flash freezing during the next cold front later next week.

For now, plan cold-weather precautions and allow extra time if traveling early or late. How cold did it feel where you live this morning?
