Austin, Texas – South Central Texas is bracing for life-threatening heat Wednesday as an Extreme Heat Warning takes effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., with actual temperatures expected to soar to 111°F and heat index values nearing 112°F across a wide stretch of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, a Heat Advisory remains in place through early afternoon before intensifying into an Extreme Heat Warning for areas including Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Del Rio, and Uvalde. High humidity paired with scorching air temps will sharply increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning.

Cities along the I-35 corridor and the Hill Country—from Llano and Kerrville to San Marcos and Seguin—should avoid non-essential outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. OSHA guidelines advise frequent shaded breaks for workers and warn that heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, remain indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly in areas where A/C access may be limited.

This is the first Extreme Heat Warning of the season for Central Texas. Additional advisories could be issued later this week as the heatwave persists.
