Amarillo, Texas – Triple-digit heat will peak within hours across the Texas Panhandle, pushing canyon temperatures to 106°F and driving widespread 100–102°F readings that can quickly overwhelm anyone without cooling.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Level 2 (moderate) heat risk is in place through the evening, with impacts most likely for people working outdoors, older adults, and anyone without reliable hydration or air conditioning. The hottest window runs from early afternoon through the evening commute.
Cities along and north of I-40—including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Canadian—are expected to reach around 100–102°F, while Dalhart and Hereford hover near 98°F. Palo Duro Canyon stands out at 106°F, where heat illness becomes more likely in a short time span. These values threaten to challenge long-standing records set in Amarillo, Dalhart, and Borger.
Limit outdoor activity to early morning or after sunset, take frequent breaks in shade, and drink water every 15–20 minutes if working outside. Check on neighbors and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
Heat exhaustion can escalate fast; confusion or loss of consciousness signals a medical emergency. This heat surge holds through this evening, with additional advisories possible if conditions persist.
