Palo Duro Canyon, Texas – Visitors to Palo Duro Canyon State Park should brace for scorching conditions Monday as heat index values soar to 105°F, prompting a Heat Advisory from 1 to 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the advisory is in effect for Palo Duro Canyon County and urges people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun, and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion. The combination of intense heat and high humidity increases the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those engaged in outdoor activity.
Park officials are encouraging hikers and campers to avoid peak heat hours, wear light clothing, and stick to shaded areas. Emergency crews will be on standby, and cooling stations may be made available if needed. The heat is expected to make outdoor recreation in the canyon dangerous during the hottest part of the day.
Today’s alert marks the first heat advisory of the summer for the canyon area, and more could follow as temperatures trend upward through mid-June.
⚠️ Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. Updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
