Austin, Texas – A tropical disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico has a 50% chance of strengthening into a tropical cyclone before it moves inland near the Texas-Mexico border late Friday or Saturday. Even if the system does not develop further, forecasters say it will boost rain chances across South Central Texas into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, confidence is growing for increased showers and thunderstorms from late Friday through Saturday, though exact rainfall totals remain uncertain. The system is expected to push tropical moisture inland, making for scattered downpours and brief street flooding in some urban areas.
The heaviest rainfall potential is along and south of U.S. 90, with coastal counties possibly seeing several inches. Travel may be impacted by reduced visibility and water-covered roadways during heavier bursts of rain.
Residents are advised to monitor local alerts, avoid driving through flooded streets, and secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds and showers. Additional advisories may be issued if the disturbance organizes further.
