A significant winter weather event is expected to impact North and Central Texas from Friday evening through Sunday, with dangerous cold and widespread freezing rain, sleet, and snow, according to the National Weather Service.

An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning, with subzero wind chills possible by Sunday night. Forecast minimum wind chills range from -1° to -6°, while overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits and teens across much of the region.

The primary hazard will be ice accumulation from freezing rain, which is expected to develop Friday evening and spread south overnight. Current forecasts show 0.25 to 0.75 inches of ice, with the highest totals north and east of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, including areas near Sherman, Paris, Denton, and Greenville. Ice amounts of 0.10 to 0.25 inches are possible farther south.

As colder air deepens, precipitation is expected to transition to sleet and snow Saturday into Sunday. Combined sleet and snow totals of 2–4 inches are possible across portions of North Texas, with localized totals up to 6 inches along and north of Highway 380. Areas farther south, including Waco, Killeen, and Temple, are more likely to see mostly sleet or a wintry mix.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected to unfold from north to south, beginning Friday evening and continuing through Saturday morning, with power outages possible due to ice accumulation on trees and power lines.

Residents are urged to complete preparations before Friday, avoid travel if possible, and closely monitor official forecasts as details continue to evolve.
