Lubbock, TX – Foggy conditions are affecting visibility across the Caprock and Rolling Plains this morning, creating dangerous travel on major routes like US-84. The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory, urging drivers to exercise caution.
According to the NWS, the advisory extends until 9 a.m., with visibility reduced to less than a quarter-mile in some areas, particularly near Silverton, Childress, and Floydada. Commuters should allow extra time for travel and avoid using high beams in foggy conditions.
As the fog lifts by mid-morning, conditions will improve, leading to mostly sunny skies with a high near 67°F. Tonight, temperatures will drop to 34°F under partly cloudy skies.
The weather becomes more severe heading into Tuesday morning, with freezing rain predicted in the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Early morning commuters may encounter slick roads as temperatures dip into the mid-20s. Wind speeds are expected to remain calm, but freezing precipitation could create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on untreated roadways.
Looking further into the week, Christmas Day is expected to bring sunny skies with a high of 58°F, while a slight chance of showers may develop late Wednesday night into early Thursday. No significant hazardous weather is anticipated beyond Tuesday.
Residents are advised to monitor updates from the NWS for potential changes to freezing rain forecasts. Be prepared for icy road conditions Tuesday morning by limiting travel when possible.
