Balmorhea, Texas – Flash flooding is stranding drivers and washing out rural roads in Reeves County this evening as intense storms continue to dump heavy rain across southwestern Texas.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for southern Reeves County. Emergency managers report flash flooding along County Road 112, east of Highway 17, with water already flowing over roadways near Balmorhea and Toyah.

Communities impacted include Balmorhea Lake, Balmorhea State Park, Saragosa, Verhalen, and Toyahvale. Creeks and low-lying areas are rapidly overflowing, and additional thunderstorms are expected into the evening, increasing the flood threat.

Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, especially on rural roads and low-water crossings. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice—most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles.

This is the first major flash flooding event in the area this summer, and more rain is possible overnight. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local media for updates, as additional warnings may be issued.
