Houston, TX – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Southeast Texas this afternoon, as dry, breezy conditions create a heightened risk for wildfires. The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, covering multiple counties across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, north winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph, will combine with relative humidity as low as 18% to create dangerous fire conditions. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 70 degrees, further drying out vegetation and increasing the potential for fires to spread rapidly.
The affected areas include Houston, Trinity, Madison, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Burleson, Brazos, Washington, Grimes, Montgomery, Liberty, Colorado, Austin, Waller, Harris, Chambers, Wharton, Fort Bend, Jackson, Matagorda, Brazoria, and Galveston counties.
Officials warn that any wildfires that ignite in these conditions could quickly escalate in size and intensity. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarette butts, and ensure vehicles do not spark fires near dry grass or brush.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or expected shortly. Residents should remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire to authorities immediately.
