Midland, TX – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Thursday across Southeast New Mexico and West Texas, including the Midland-Odessa area, as critical fire conditions persist due to strong winds, extremely low humidity, and dry fuels.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, southwest winds are reaching 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 55 mph in some areas, particularly across mountain terrain. Relative humidity levels are dropping as low as 8 percent, creating an environment ripe for fast-moving, wind-driven wildfires.
Counties under the Red Flag Warning include Reeves, Culberson, Loving, and Ward in Texas, and Lea and Eddy counties in New Mexico. A Fire Weather Watch is also in place for Friday afternoon and evening, signaling continued risk.
Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, welding, or any activities that could produce sparks. Even minor ignition sources could trigger large fires under current conditions. Local burn bans are in effect, and emergency management teams remain on alert.
Fire weather conditions are expected to ease late Friday as humidity rises and wind speeds diminish slightly.
