Austin, TX – Fire weather conditions are expected to intensify across south-central Texas this week, with elevated to critical fire danger persisting through at least Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Austin-San Antonio, gusty winds and extremely dry air will create near-critical fire weather conditions, particularly along and west of the I-35 corridor. Winds will range from 10-15 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph. Humidity levels could drop as low as 7%, increasing the risk of wildfires spreading quickly.
Officials warn that any fires that ignite could grow rapidly under these conditions. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to remain vigilant. Areas most at risk include Kerrville, Fredericksburg, San Antonio, and Austin, where elevated fire threats are forecast.
The NWS forecast indicates that fire danger will peak midweek, with Wednesday expected to bring the most critical conditions. By Thursday, humidity levels are expected to increase slightly, leading to a reduction in fire risk.
