Austin, TX – A dry Pacific cold front is sweeping across South-Central Texas today, bringing elevated fire weather conditions to the region. With warm temperatures, dry fuels, and gusty winds expected, officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning or any activity that could inadvertently spark a fire.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Austin, the near-critical fire weather risk will affect western and central counties, including Travis, Williamson, and Hays, until around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Gusts up to 25 mph, coupled with humidity levels as low as 12-25%, are creating an environment highly conducive to wildfires. “Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly,” the NWS warns.

The elevated fire risk comes alongside unseasonably warm weather, with high temperatures reaching the mid-to-upper 80s across much of the area today. Austin residents can expect a high near 86°F this afternoon. However, a brief respite from the heat is on the horizon, as cooler temperatures are forecast for Thursday and Friday, with highs dipping to the mid-70s.

Looking ahead, South-Central Texas will see mostly sunny skies and minimal weather impacts for the remainder of the week. Saturday brings slightly warmer temperatures, followed by a potential weak front arriving Sunday night into Monday, possibly delivering a much-needed chance of showers to ease dry conditions.
