Mineral Wells, Texas – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across parts of North Texas this afternoon as extreme heat, strong winds, and very low humidity combine to create critical fire conditions through 8 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Montague, Young, Jack, Stephens, Palo Pinto, and Eastland counties. Southwest winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, are combining with relative humidity as low as 14 percent and temperatures reaching up to 101 degrees.
Communities including Graham, Breckenridge, Eastland, and Mineral Wells are in the highest risk zone, where any spark could rapidly ignite dry vegetation and spread across large areas. Officials note that fuel conditions are in the 90th percentile, meaning vegetation is highly receptive to fire.
Roadways such as U.S. 180 and State Highway 16 may see reduced visibility if fires develop and produce smoke.
Outdoor burning, welding, or any activity that could produce sparks should be avoided immediately. Residents are urged to properly dispose of cigarettes and report any fire activity right away.
The most dangerous conditions will persist through 8 p.m., with fire risk expected to decrease slightly after sunset. Additional warnings may be issued if conditions continue.
