Falls City, TX – A 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Falls City, rattling parts of South Texas early Tuesday and prompting minor concern from residents across the region.

According to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet), the quake occurred at 12:21 a.m. CDT (05:21 UTC) on April 2, about 1 kilometer north-northwest of Falls City. The epicenter was located approximately 50 miles southeast of San Antonio at a shallow depth of just 0.5 kilometers, increasing the likelihood of it being felt on the surface.

Three citizen reports were filed with the U.S. Geological Survey, indicating light shaking in the area. No damage or injuries have been reported as of Tuesday morning. Falls City is located in Karnes County, a region not commonly associated with significant seismic activity, although minor tremors occasionally occur in Central and South Texas.

Experts recommend residents review earthquake preparedness steps, including securing heavy furniture and identifying safe spots indoors. While Tuesday’s quake was minor, shallow earthquakes can sometimes lead to stronger aftershocks.

TexNet will continue monitoring seismic activity in the region. Residents who felt the tremor are encouraged to report their experience through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” portal to help scientists refine local intensity data.
