Houston, TX – Treacherous road conditions are gripping the Houston area today as freezing temperatures create black ice on major roads and bridges. An extreme cold warning remains in effect until 9 a.m., and drivers are urged to exercise caution, particularly on elevated surfaces such as the Gulf Freeway and I-45.

According to the National Weather Service, black ice is nearly invisible and most likely to form on bridges, shaded areas, and overpasses. Temperatures will rise slightly to a high of 40°F under sunny skies this afternoon, but refreezing is expected tonight as lows drop to 31°F. Morning commuters should reduce speeds, avoid sudden braking, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Looking ahead, Thursday’s forecast promises mostly sunny skies and a high near 49°F, offering some relief from the freezing conditions. Overnight temperatures will hover just above freezing, reducing the risk of widespread ice formation. Friday will also bring clear skies, with a high of 50°F during the day and a low of 37°F at night.

Warmer weather is expected this weekend, with highs reaching the mid-50s on Saturday and lows in the low 50s. However, rain chances increase Saturday night, with a 50% chance of showers. Sunday may bring heavier rain and possible thunderstorms, with a high near 65°F and a low of 54°F.

While conditions are set to improve later this week, Houston residents should remain vigilant for icy patches on roads this morning and overnight. Use caution and stay updated on the latest weather advisories.
