HOUSTON — As crowds rush out for Black Friday deals, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is reminding shoppers to stay alert — and keep valuables out of sight.

Deputies say thieves are also out this weekend, looking for easy opportunities in crowded parking lots. The department’s safety message is simple but proven: Hide your things. Lock your car. Take your keys.

Officials urge shoppers to secure their vehicles, use caution with remote-start systems, and store gifts or packages in the trunk rather than on seats. Parking near lights or security cameras can also reduce risk.

“Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings,” deputies said in Friday’s reminder. “If you see something suspicious, report it right away.”

The sheriff’s office added that even a quick stop between stores can lead to break-ins if valuables are visible. Residents are encouraged to avoid carrying large amounts of cash and to use card payments when possible.

Harris County law enforcement will increase patrols around shopping centers through the weekend to deter theft and ensure safe holiday activity.
