Galveston, Texas – Beachgoers heading to Galveston today should prepare for dangerous sun and surf conditions as a yellow flag flies, signaling a moderate risk of rip currents and surf heights nearing 3 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston-Galveston, air temperatures will climb into the upper 80s with heat indices near 100°F, while water temperatures hover around 70°F. A UV Index of 11—classified as “Extreme”—means sunburn can occur in under 15 minutes. Officials urge visitors to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and take frequent shade breaks, especially from late morning through mid-afternoon.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the day, especially between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Gusty winds from the south at 15 to 20 mph may pick up during storm activity, increasing risks for swimmers and small watercraft. Swimmers are advised to stay close to shore and be alert for changing surf conditions.

While conditions are typical for late June, the extreme UV rating and storm threat elevate safety concerns for locals and tourists alike. More updates may follow if weather hazards intensify into the weekend.
