Austin, TX – An Arctic cold front is sweeping through Texas tonight, bringing frigid temperatures and potential snow to the Austin area. Residents are urged to prepare for freezing conditions and hard freezes expected Sunday night through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will plummet into the 20s Sunday night, with lows as cold as 18°F by Tuesday night. Monday night into Tuesday brings a 50% chance of snow, creating potential travel hazards, especially on I-35 and surrounding roadways. Wind chills will make conditions feel even colder, dropping into the teens and single digits.
Sunday will remain sunny with a high of 42°F, but temperatures will fall quickly after sunset. Monday is expected to bring the most impactful weather, with a high near 37°F and overnight snow showers that may accumulate in some areas. Officials recommend insulating pipes, protecting outdoor plants, and bringing pets indoors ahead of the freeze.
The week ahead will stay cold, with highs remaining in the 30s and 40s and hard freezes each night. By midweek, sunny skies will return, but overnight temperatures will remain below freezing.
Drivers should use caution Monday and Tuesday morning as icy patches may form on elevated surfaces and bridges. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles and stay tuned to local updates.
