Midland, TX – A high wind and blowing dust warning is in effect for portions of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico, creating dangerous travel conditions through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Midland/Odessa, widespread blowing dust will significantly reduce visibility until at least 2 p.m. MST (3 p.m. CST), while high wind warnings remain active until 8 p.m. MST (9 p.m. CST). Winds of 45 to 55 mph with gusts up to 80 mph are expected in the Guadalupe Mountains, while other affected regions will experience gusts up to 65 mph.

Areas under the warning include the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains, Davis Mountains, Eddy County Plains, and several cities such as Midland, Odessa, Carlsbad, and Fort Stockton. The combination of strong winds and blowing dust poses serious hazards for drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles such as trucks and RVs. Sudden visibility drops to near zero are possible in open fields, making travel extremely dangerous.

The NWS advises residents to stay indoors, especially those with respiratory conditions. Drivers should pull off the road if they encounter dense dust, turn off lights, and avoid using brakes to prevent accidents. Power outages and falling debris are also possible due to the extreme winds.

Authorities urge caution and preparedness as conditions are expected to gradually improve after Tuesday evening.
