Albuquerque, NM – Strong winds and low humidity are set to create dangerous fire weather conditions across New Mexico and Texas on Wednesday, prompting multiple Fire Weather Watches from the National Weather Service (NWS).

According to the NWS, gusty northwest winds of 25 to 50 mph combined with relative humidity levels dropping as low as 10% will contribute to an increased wildfire risk. The East Central Plains of New Mexico, Hudspeth County in Texas, and areas spanning the South Plains, Hill Country, and West Texas are all under Fire Weather Watches beginning Wednesday afternoon and extending into the evening.

In eastern New Mexico, strong winds driven by an upper-level trough will peak during the afternoon before subsiding in the evening. Similar conditions will persist in Texas, with high temperatures reaching into the 60s and 90s in some areas, further drying the landscape and making ignition more likely.

Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning and any activities that could spark fires. The NWS warns that any fires that develop will spread quickly due to the extreme conditions.

Residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for possible Red Flag Warnings. Fire crews and emergency responders remain on high alert as dry fuels and strong winds heighten the wildfire risk.
