Houston, Texas – Hot, stagnant air and high ozone levels are combining into an unhealthy mix for residents across Southeast Texas Tuesday, triggering an Air Quality Alert for Houston, Galveston, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, atmospheric conditions are favorable for producing elevated ozone pollution Tuesday afternoon and evening. The alert, classified as an Ozone Action Day, primarily affects sensitive groups including children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma. Those groups are urged to avoid extended outdoor exposure, especially during peak heat and traffic hours.

Highs are expected to reach into the mid-90s across much of the region, including 95°F in Livingston and 94°F in Katy and El Campo. Houston will top out around 92°F, with only a 5% to 15% chance of rain offering little relief from the hazy, hot conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to reduce emissions by limiting car trips, refueling in the evening, and avoiding idling. Residents should also postpone yard work and avoid burning materials outdoors to prevent worsening air quality.

The alert remains in effect through Tuesday evening, with slightly better conditions expected midweek as rain chances gradually rise.

Five Day Forecast for Houston, TX:

  • Wednesday: High 92°F / Low 74°F, 15% chance of rain
  • Thursday: High 91°F / Low 73°F, 20% chance of rain
