Terre Haute, IN – Two off-duty Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies are being credited with rescuing two children from a residential fire on North Clinton Street late Saturday afternoon.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, central dispatch received a 4:15 p.m. call on January 5 reporting a house fire with children still inside. Deputies Newman and Bliss, who had just completed their shifts and were nearby, responded immediately after hearing the call.

Upon arrival, the deputies noticed the home was actively smoking. Alongside an Otter Creek Fire Department firefighter, they entered the residence and safely removed two children — one of whom had been asleep inside.

The Otter Creek Fire Department then assumed control of the incident, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. Officials confirmed that neither child required hospitalization or additional medical treatment.

Sheriff Derek Fell commended his deputies for their quick and selfless actions, stating that they “took the initiative to act while in an off-duty capacity, without hesitation.”

Authorities did not specify the extent of the property damage or the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
