Gatlinburg, TN – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Smoky Mountains, effective from 3 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday. Snowfall and strong winds are expected to impact Blount, Cocke, and Sevier County mountains, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, snowfall accumulations between 1 to 3 inches are expected at elevations above 2,500 feet, with higher totals possible at peaks exceeding 5,000 feet. In addition, wind gusts may reach speeds of up to 40 mph, potentially causing downed tree branches and further complicating road conditions.

The advisory warns that slippery roads could impact the Thursday evening commute, particularly in areas with steep inclines and winding roads. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution while driving and to check road conditions before traveling. The Tennessee Department of Transportation advises motorists to call 511 for up-to-date road conditions.

Those in affected areas should prepare for rapidly changing weather, dress warmly, and secure outdoor objects that could be displaced by strong winds. Travelers heading to or through the Smoky Mountains should allow extra travel time and carry emergency supplies.

For further updates, monitor local weather reports and heed any additional advisories issued by authorities.
