Nashville, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of Middle Tennessee as forecasters warn of potentially significant snow and ice later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, the watch runs from Friday evening, Jan. 23, through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2026, covering a large portion of Middle Tennessee, including the Nashville metro and surrounding counties.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations over 6 inches are possible, along with ice accumulations up to one-quarter inch. The highest snow totals are most likely north of Interstate 40, while areas south of I-40 face a greater risk for impactful ice accumulation.

The combination of snow and ice could lead to widespread travel disruptions, with the National Weather Service warning that travel could be nearly impossible during the height of the storm. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways are expected to become especially hazardous.

Ice buildup on trees and power lines may result in power outages and tree damage, particularly in areas where freezing rain persists for several hours. Some outages could be prolonged if ice accumulations reach forecast levels.

Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely as confidence increases in storm track, precipitation type, and amounts. Emergency officials advise limiting travel during the storm window and preparing for the possibility of extended power interruptions.

Those who must travel should plan ahead and carry emergency supplies, including blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, and a charged mobile device.

The developing winter system could significantly impact weekend travel, work schedules, and school activities, especially for commuters across Middle Tennessee.

Forecasters emphasize that details may change as the event approaches and encourage residents to stay weather-aware through the weekend.
