MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A messy winter system continues to spread a mix of light snow and freezing drizzle across the Mid-South this evening, creating slick roads and hazardous travel from northeast Arkansas through western Tennessee and the Missouri Bootheel. The wintry mix is expected to linger until 6 a.m. Tuesday, making for a challenging overnight and early-morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early Tuesday for dozens of counties, including Dyer, Gibson, Madison, Tipton, and Haywood in Tennessee; Craighead and Crittenden in Arkansas; and Dunklin and Pemiscot in Missouri. Additional light snow accumulations up to one inch and a thin glaze of ice are possible before precipitation ends.
Roadways—especially bridges, overpasses, and untreated streets—will become slick and icy tonight. The Tennessee Department of Transportation urges drivers to reduce speed, avoid sudden stops, and allow extra braking distance. Any lingering moisture could refreeze as temperatures dip into the upper 20s overnight.
Those heading out for late shifts or early commutes should use caution and plan extra travel time. Sidewalks and driveways may also turn slippery, posing a risk for falls. Officials recommend staying indoors where possible until conditions improve by sunrise Tuesday.
